The brief for this project called for the design of 12 luxury villas within a complex of 500 houses, the aim being to provide a premium brand line for the development as a whole that reflected a contemporary resort theme. There was one small complication, however, in that the villas had to be sited on existing foundations originally intended for two semi-detached row houses. This severely limited the locations available for vertical load-bearing structures and held the potential that the completed villa would still look like two units.
To overcome this, the design uses a strategy of stretching and overlapping the internal volumes to create a dynamic form for the facades, which were given further life with generous cantilevered balconies and deep overhangs. Combined with shading trellises, these further disguise the internal divisions while creating an inviting environment for indoor/outdoor living.
