Because they are exempted from floor area calculations, bay windows have become the vernacular of residential buildings in Hong Kong, proliferating everywhere and dominating the facades of high-rise towers and individual homes alike. The challenge on this project for a small up-market estate of three- and four-storey apartment buildings - was to turn this constraint into an opportunity for innovation and delight.
Taking inspiration from traditional Mediterranean architecture, with its bold and colourful external window frames and shutters, ARK sought to give this age-old device a contemporary twist by exaggerating the frames and projecting them forward to create a series of brightly painted window 'shields'. With their asymmetric placing to add movement and rich colours, the building facades are given a playful feel, helping to promote a relaxed 'resort' atmosphere for the development as a whole.
