The Vanke Qibao clubhouse forms the leisure component of a larger residential development in this fast developing area of Shanghai. Located at the main entrance, the clubhouse sets the standard for this luxury new development by defining a strong brand statement, which also promotes the estate’s prestige.
With pedestrians approaching from different directions on both sides of the building, the floorplan of the entrance level is bisected by a central pedestrian thoroughfare, delineated by the geometry of two opposing arcs that respond to the natural flow of people into and through the building.
The two major volumes in the building – the sportshall and swimming pool – lie on either side of this central access, with smaller spaces for other facilities and programmes wrapped around them to create a rich internal experience. A gym on the upper floor opens onto a jogging track that loops around the building up to an extensive roof garden – incorporating bars, restaurants, public terraces and an outdoor games court. These are enclosed behind a gold-coloured patterned metal screen that covers the whole building, providing shade and framing the views. Overlaid on buff-coloured granite cladding, the screens also give the clubhouse its unique contemporary expression.
